Ritchie is one of Edmonton's most popular, semi-luxury and historical communities, bounded by 72 Avenue, Whyte Avenue, Mill Creek Ravine and Strathcona Junction. Ritchie Edmonton is only a few minutes from both the University of Alberta and the Downtown Core. Early commercial real estate development radiated out from an area on Whyte (82nd) Avenue, now called Old Strathcona, where a streetcar line joined Ritchie with downtown Edmonton from 1908 to 1949. Most single Family houses in Ritchie were originally built prior to 1950, but times have changed along with the houses. Because of South Edmonton and its history and location, Ritchie is an area of mixed land use still predominantly residential. Ritchie was named for Robert Ritchie, former Mayor of the Town of Strathcona and original owner of the Ritchie Mill, which still stands as a historic site at 102nd Street and Saskatchewan Drive. Ritchie Edmonton is a favourite community in south Edmonton which runs along the south Mill Creek Ravine and our festive Whyte Avenue. It is named for the original owner of the Ritchie Mill and former mayor of the City of Strathcona. The population of Ritchie enjoys good access to the nightlife of nearby Old Strathcona district.
