About Alberta Avenue Edmonton

Located in Central Edmonton, Alberta Avenue is one of Edmonton’s oldest residential districts, originally called the Village of North Edmonton. The street names in Alberta Avenue were also changed. 122 Street was originally called Woodward Avenue, 97 Street was Namayo Avenue, 111 Avenue was Norwood Boulevard, and 89 Street was originally called Fox Street.


Alberta Avenue is great for public transportation, is only a few minutes to the Commonwealth Stadium, Northlands Ice Coliseum, Expo Centre, N.A.I.T. and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Real estate in Alberta Avenue, Edmonton is on a large spectrum from mature pre-war character houses selling for lot values to mid $400,000 properties which were built during Edmonton's last real estate boom.


In the 1970s, Alberta Avenue fell on hard times and houses prices were less than today's vehicle prices. Today it is undergoing revitalization and has increasingly become a more desirable place to live due to its close proximity to the downtown core. Today, house prices in Alberta Avenue are still very reasonable and offer easy access to amenities such as public transit, the Commonwealth Recreation Centre, the Sprucewood Library and many family owned and bakeries.


Alberta Avenue has an active community league, a community newspaper called the Rat Creek Press that launched the Alberta Avenue History Project to celebrate the rich past of the community. Much of the Alberta Avenue revitalization efforts are supported by the non-profit organizations including the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts and each year the community celebrates the Kaleido Family Arts Festival and the Deep Freeze Winter Festival.


This first small pockets of houses remained quite isolated for several years until 1906, when a major portion of what is now known as Eastwood was sub-divided. The Alberta Avenue area developed in a more piecemeal fashion between 1906 and 1912 as Edmonton’s real estate brokers and speculators capitalized on the land boom that was sweeping the prairies during this period. This rapid growth period in Edmonton and its surrounding areas peaked around the year 1912, by which time the basic physical layout of Alberta Avenue as we know it today had been established.
