McKernan is one of south Edmonton's fastest developing communities for infill homes and modern, executive style, luxury houses. The original houses in McKernan were constructed in 1930-1960. Today there are several infill houses offering more living square footage only minutes from the University of Alberta, the LRT and Whyte Avenue. McKernan was named after James McKernan, a local prominent businessman and the land on which McKernan now sits was part of the original land holding of James McKernan. McKernan Edmonton, located in real estate zone 15 is a highly popular community the South Edmonton University Area. bounded by 72 Avenue, 113 Street, 109 Street and University Avenue. McKernan is named for James McKernan, a prominent businessman and citizen of Edmonton's early rival, the City of Strathcona.
