Newton is a smaller community in the ice district with a mix of single-family detached homes form pre-war character houses to two-story with double attached garages, located in the Highlands Area between Montrose and Luxurious Highlands, bounded by 118 Avenue, 50 Street and Yellowhead Trail in real estate zone 06. Impatient for northeast Edmonton to grow, real estate developers subdivided southern Newton before it became part of the city in the early 1900s. A booming Edmonton soon absorbed Newton through two annexations. The portion north of 123 Avenue was annexed in 1912, and southern Newton Edmonton joined Edmonton a year later. Real estate in Newton spans well over 100 years with primarily detached houses and was named in honor of Anglican Minister Reverend William Newton, who built a church and hospital 10 kilometers east of Fort Edmonton. Over the last few years, homes in Newton have slowly been replaced with newer, more modern homes.
